Specifying Conference Security Options

Conference security is handled in two principal ways:

You can set up your conference so that every user must register. And, since every user, even new users, are assigned to a user group, you use group permissions to control what Forums features and options are available to end users.

Managing User Authentication

Authentication is managed on the conference level. You can use three different types of authentication:

The following table shows how you can coordinate conference security options to enable various degrees of security.

Highest security

All users must register by providing a user name and password.

All user registrations must be approved by the Forums administrator, a conference manager, or a moderator.

All users must log in.

Moderate security

All users must register by providing a user name and password.

Registration approval is not required.

All users must log in.

Low or no security

No user registration is required.

No registration approval needed.

No user log in required.

To require user registration:

  1. Open the Conference Manager and select the conference you want to edit.
  2. Click the Security button.
  3. Click the Registration Required checkbox.

Users entering the conference will now be required to register by providing basic information, such as full name, username, password, and email address.

To require user registration approval:

  1. Open the Conference Manager and select the conference you want to edit.
  2. Click the Security button.
  3. Click the User Approval Required checkbox.

Users will now be required to receive approval before entering a conference.

To require session login:

  1. Open the Conference Manager and select the conference you want to edit.
  2. Click the Security button.
  3. Click the Forced Session Login checkbox.

Registered users must now provide a valid login name and password. Unregistered users can access the user registration form from the login form. Sessions end when the user closes the current browser session.
