Upgrading from an earlier release

After successfully completing the Forums 2.0 setup program to install Forums, you are ready to upgrade your Forums 1.x data sources for use with Forums 2.0.

You can install Forums 2.0 without fear that your conference data will be lost. Forums installs the new conference databases in a separate location.

Running the Forums upgrade wizard

The database structure used in Forums 2.0 is different from that used in earlier releases of Forums, as well as earlier releases of Fourms 2.0 beta. For that reason, Allaire provides the Forums upgrade wizard to help you migrate data from earler versions of Forums. You use the wizard to copy Forums 1.x data to Forums 2.0. This process preserves your Forums 1.x database tables while copying and adapting the data for Forums 2.0.

Upgrading data from earlier releases of Forums 2.0 beta is not supported.

Databases you can upgrade

With the Forums upgrade wizard you can upgrade your Access and Microsoft SQL Server databases to Forums 2.0. No other migration paths are supported at this time.

Note: Upon completion, you must redefine permissions for all groups in your new Forums 2.0 conferences.

Step one: Select the data source type

Warning: Do not access your Forums 1.x data while the upgrade is running. Doing so can corrupt your Forums data.

  1. Load the following URL in your browser:
    http://web_server_root/CFAppMan/ForumsUpgrade/Index.cfm
  2. Select the type of upgrade you want to perform: MS Access to MS Access or MS SQL Server to MS SQL Server and then click Continue.

Step two: Verify data source names

  1. Review the names for your Forums 1.x data sources.
  2. Enter new names only if you’ve explicitly changed your Forums 1.x data source names. If you receive an ODBC error message, you may need to verify that your data sources are properly registered in the Cold Fusion Administrator. Refer to your Cold Fusion User Guide for more information about verifying data sources in the Cold Fusion Administrator.

Step three: Confirm data source replacement

Click Continue to proceed with the upgrade. The upgrade wizard begins replacing data in your newly installed Forums 2.0 data sources with data from your Forums 1.x data sources.

Step four: Processing user tables

  1. Take the default batch size for upgrading user records.
  2. Click Continue. The upgrade wizard begins processing user records. This process can take a few minutes if you have a large amount of data to process. If each cycle of the batch process takes more than 20 seconds, you can click the Change button to try a lower batch size number.

Note: When you click Change to enter a new batch size, the upgrade wizard picks up where it left off in processing your data source.

Step five: Processing conferences, forums, threads, and messages

  1. Take the default batch size for upgrading conference, forum, thread, and message tables.
  2. Click Continue. The upgrade wizard begins processing records. This process can take a few minutes if you have a large amount of data to process. If each cycle of the batch process takes more than 20 seconds, you can click the Change button to try a lower batch size number.

Note: When you click Change to enter a new batch size, the upgrade wizard picks up where it left off in processing your data source.

Step six: Indexing messages

This is the last step.

  1. Take default batch size for indexing messages.
  2. Click Continue. The upgrade wizard begins indexing conference messages. As before, you can click the Change button to change the default batch size to improve performance during processing.

After the upgrade wizard finishes indexing your messages, you need to redefine group permissions using the Forums Administrator. For information about defining group permissions, refer to the Allaire Forums Adminstrator's Guide.
