Description: The Indivisible Project is hiring a Staff Attorney or General Counsel, depending on experience. This person will report to the Chief Operating Officer and play a critical role in guiding Indivisible's strategy and operations, advising our leadership team, staff, and volunteers. As our first in-house lawyer, he or she will coordinate with outside counsel and other experts to direct, supervise, coordinate, or carry out necessary legal work to support Indivisible’s programs and projects.

We are hiring for the General Counsel or Staff Attorney position immediately in our Washington, DC office. The General Counsel position is full-time, with a minimum salary of $90,000 annually, commensurate with experience. The Staff Attorney position is full-time, with a minimum salary of $65,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Independently conduct, coordinate, analyze, and synthesize complex legal research. Develop and implement comprehensive and sophisticated legal strategies based on organizational considerations. Prepare strong oral arguments, presentations, memoranda and guidance documents, reports and recommendations, and legal pleadings. Develop or coordinate the development of training materials and lead training sessions on a variety of legal issues. Review and assist with contracts, leases, grant agreements, job descriptions, and other documents, and provide guidance to staff on document drafting, review, and negotiation. Review and give input into legally sensitive communications, as well talking points and other materials. Represent Indivisible with outside stakeholders, including legal advocacy groups and partner organizations, as well as in complex negotiations. Monitor legal developments in wide range of legal areas, including elections and nonprofit law; promote and defend Indivisible’s interests before courts, administrative agencies, and policymakers, and regularly report on legal developments to appropriate parties. Manage projects involving legal volunteers, pro bono counsel, and other contractors and coordinate with outside counsel. May supervise compliance or administrative staff. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Required)

Juris Doctor degree or equivalent from an accredited law school. Member of the Bar in the District of Columbia. 1 to 5 years of experience practicing law in one or more areas relevant to Indivisible. Knowledge of law relevant to Indivisible, including nonprofit and elections law. Ability to produce high-quality, accurate legal work under pressure with minimal supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to establish credibility and rapport with people from diverse backgrounds, including organizational leadership, staff, and volunteers, as well as local group leaders and members. High emotional intelligence and excellent political judgment. Creativity, tenacity, logical thinking skills, and thoroughness in considering legal and strategic questions. Strong organizational skills, contributing to excellent document management practices at the organization. Strong time management and case management skills, and the ability to handle multiple varied and complex assignments on tight deadlines. Skill in using computerized legal research tools such as Lexis-Nexis and internet-based legal databases. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Google Drive applications. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and the progressive movement. Ability to work long hours as necessary and travel periodically.

Qualifications (Desired)

For the General Counsel level position, candidates should additionally: Have 5 or more years of experience practicing law in one or more areas of law relevant to Indivisible, or equivalent experience. Demonstrate substantial accomplishments in areas of law relevant to the organization.
